sticks and stones?

In a world of sin and the popular anti-Christ worldview, online bullying, in-your-face verbal abuse, and really all persecution should be expected:

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived….”

Take courage:

“…but as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:12-17, ESV; emphasis mine)

“For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” (1 Peter 2:20-25, ESV; emphasis mine)

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
‘Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.’
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” (Ephesians 5:1-21, ESV; emphasis mine)

“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 ESV)

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” (Romans 5:1-11, ESV; emphasis mine)

HOT BUTTON | gay, hell, and laws engraved in stone?

I’m pushing it.

I know I’m going to lose FB “friends” over this. But before you click “unfriend,” please read all the way to the bottom of this post.

DISCLAIMER: This isn’t a judgment post against humanity. I’m including myself in the list below. This is actually a call to everyone in America to examine your own hearts and think about the foundations of these “hot button” issues.

(My Twitter feed is going to blow up with hate speech of false accusations saying I hate gays. I do not now nor have I ever hated gay people. I’m called to love ALL people. Does this mean I love their choices, words, and lifestyles? No. I have my own right, at least for now in this country, to hold to my own set of convictions. It looks like this “right” might very well be gone before my time on earth/in America is up. Call me “intolerant.” But before you do, consider the fact that, should you choose to go that route, you will now be the intolerant one.)

This post really came about for 3 reasons:

  1. The recent controversy involving Dan Cathy, of Chick-Fil-A, saying he doesn’t support same-sex unions.
  2. My recent discovery of a movement (forms of this have been around for a long time, I know) that says Hell (the place of eternal torment and judgment mentioned in the Bible) is not real. (http://www.hellboundthemovie.com/)
  3. My Thursday lunch post on IG saying I have the right to support CFA. I got a few negative comments on my various social media (to be expected). I also got a question: Do I believe that gay people should be put to death?

Hundreds of people have written on these topics. I don’t want to add noise and confusion. If you want to have a respectful conversation on this, post a comment and I would love to chat. I have a full time job and don’t monitor my social media and blog 24/7. I would love to stare at my screen all day (not really) and comment and pin cool stuff on Pinterest and follow my favorite celebs on Twitter. But alas, I cannot.

Think & Respond:

  1. Does an individual/organization have a constitutional right in America to hold to whatever belief he chooses? If not, why?
  2. People don’t like the idea of a place of eternal torment and judgment. They say God is love and He wouldn’t dare send people to Hell. How can you know for sure whether Hell is real or not?
  3. What are your thoughts about engaging in conversation with a stranger via social media?

~

I’m sure you were wondering whether I was going to answer the question from the 3rd reason above. Well, here’s my answer.

We should ALL be put to death.

Every single human being, except for Jesus Christ, has been/is a sinner and, therefore, an enemy of God.

“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God….”
Romans 3:23

“as it is written: ’None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God.’”
Romans 3:10-11

“For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.”
James 2:10

Do you ever remember learning about the Law of Moses, the 10 Commandments in the book of Exodus?

  • Have you ever taken the Lord’s name in vain?
  • Have you ever dishonored your parents?
  • What about lying?
  • Did you ever steal from anyone?
  • How about lust? Or adultery?
  • Has there ever been a point in your life where you longed for something that didn’t belong to you?

According to the verse above in James and the general teaching of Scripture, if I ever broke ANY of these laws, even just once, I would be guilty before a holy God.

There is hope still.

It involved a Roman cross and the sacrifice of the spotless, blameless Lamb of God.

“…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8

Were it not for Christ’s sacrifice, paying our ransom through His suffering and death, we would be destined to pay for our own sins for all eternity in Hell. Repent from your sins and believe in Jesus and His finished work on the cross and you will be saved.

“…because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
Romans 10:9-10

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9

Broken Eagles

Those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles … (Isaiah 40:31, NASU)

There she was – a beautiful, majestic American Bald Eagle – separated from the curious crowd by a moat and a four-foot fence.  She was perched on a large log. Above her the open sky beckoned – no cage, no netting, nothing to obstruct her flight.

I've always been fascinated by eagles. I'm glad the turkey lost out on being our national bird. ;) On a more serious note - Isaiah 40:31 has always been one of my favorite Bible verses. This post by mi hermano, Ernesto, is a powerful reminder that we should examine our lives, repent from our sin, trust in Christ alone for eternal salvation from the wrath of the One whom we have offended, and live our lives for His glory by the power of His Spirit. Run the race. Or maybe I should say, "Soar the heights of the heavens?"

Do you love your neighbor? (Or, is your friend living a lie?)

What do Christian Teens Actually Believe About Jesus?

(Click the link above from Biola Magazine)

How can I personally reach people in Gen Y?

The Bible answers this question from a different route:

How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
(Psalm 119:9 ESV)

The word of God. The Bible.

In it is everything we need to live – life and godliness. (2 Peter 1:3)

This is all written with the presupposition that you believe in the God of the Bible, that His word is true, sufficient, and infallible, and that His Son, Jesus, is everything He claimed to be in the written testimony of Scripture.

I write this with a heavy heart. I keep hearing of friends who are walking away from the faith they once claimed. In fact, I’m adding a new member to this list today. (If you, the reader, are one of these friends, I beg you to come to Christ. You know what the Bible says. You’ve been taught the truth your entire lives. Why are you rebelling against your Savior? You’re breaking my heart. But even more importantly, you’re slapping God in the face. Each of us put Christ on the cross. You’re just choosing to do it over again…and again…and again.)

Were they ever truly Christians? Or was this “faith” just a culturally acceptable, peer pressure induced state of being…until something else “better” and more convenient came along?

Here are a few quotes I found particularly insightful from the article above:

  • I don’t see Scripture needing any special ad campaign or “teen friendly” package. It already has within its pages everything a Christian teenager wants and needs in life. What our kids must come to know is that their Bible is real and true and trustworthy. When they come to grips with that, it’ll change everything — and create a hunger for God’s Word that won’t be denied.
  • Right belief translates into real experience.
  • The absolute best thing you can do for any Christian teenager is to help that teen grow confident in the trustworthiness of Scripture. Teens who believe the Bible is reliable are more likely to embrace authentic Christian beliefs and — according to the data — are significantly more likely to experience an authentic, noticeable relationship with God.

Here is a challenge for all of us. Are you comfortable with your current friends/clique/peer group? Do you ever talk about serious things – you know, like faith in Jesus?

A human soul is invaluable.

Get out of your comfort zone!?

Even better, make a new one.

The definition of “comfort zone” must be one that speaks of openness and honesty about Jesus and His word, the Bible.

Don’t wait until tomorrow. It might be too late.

speechless yet again

Disclaimer: I’m keeping the title the same, but I will have you know I had no intent of posting so many words when I started this article! I am not trying to mislead anyone through some “form of cruel irony.” (Movie reference?) ;)

This post finds its roots in a book I was reading on humility. The author suggested an avenue of further study: the incommunicable attributes of God. What a great way to learn humility – being humbled by the knowledge of a great and powerful God!

The first attribute I chose to study is God’s sovereignty.

[Sovereignty = Supreme power, authority, and/or excellence]

God’s sovereignty is unique. He alone is sovereign over all things.

I’m not writing to present a fancy theological viewpoint on God’s sovereignty…that has already been done by several learned godly men and I know I wouldn’t present the topic as well as them. My main purpose here is to post a few comments about an article I read by Barnhouse on the sovereignty of God.

Much of Barnhouse’s article discusses God’s sovereignty in light of His choosing certain people to save. We were all enemies of God…equally wicked and lost in His sight. He chose to save some and condemn others. It is by nothing we were or could be that He chose to save us.

Another major theme throughout the article was God’s sovereignty over health and diseases. God has a plan and a reason for bringing trials into the lives of His children. One of the best Biblical examples Barnhouse uses is the man who was blind from birth. The disciples ask Christ, “‘Who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?’ and the Lord Jesus said, ‘Neither: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.’” Barnhouse continues, “Do you mean, you say, that God Almighty let a man be blind for thirty or forty years so that Jesus could perform a miracle on him? Certainly.”

For reasons outside of our finite knowledge, God chooses to allow some people to go through severe trials. I know a few brothers and sisters who are going through very difficult and painful health issues. I pray that God will give them the grace and strength to allow these trials to stretch their faith in Him. As easy as it would be to grumble and complain about the “unnecessary difficulty” added upon this already complicated life on earth, God truly deserves honor and praise for the trials He places in our lives. We are to trust in Him with all our hearts. (Proverbs 3:5-6) He is our sovereign; we are His slaves.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:18-39

How is THAT for perspective?! I need to be reminded of this constantly.

I am very grateful for the health God has given me. I recognize that it is a gift from His gracious hand. But God owes me nothing. Should He choose to take away my good health tomorrow morning, He would be completely right to do so. May I always remember Job’s response to the Lord’s work in his life:

The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Job 1:21

One final remark – God is sovereign over the direction of my life.

At this stage of my life there is a lot of uncertainty.

I don’t know what career I want. I don’t know if I want to stay where I am. I don’t know whether I should remain single or not. I don’t know what tomorrow holds.

The trouble with these statements: “Ah! Pronoun trouble.” (Looney Tunes, anyone?) :)

I find a huge relief in being reminded that God is in control…He is sovereign. I’m not here for me. I’m a slave of Christ…I’m here to serve Him. I am to deny myself, take up my cross daily, and follow Him!

What is required of us is that we be so yielded to God that we can understand the nature of the place where He has put us, the nature of the assets He has put at our disposal; and that we should say to Him, “Lord, I would be faithful as I am, where I am, for Thee.” (Barnhouse, “The Sovereignty of God”)

thoughts after posting about hope…

I was reminded, after posting about God’s promise of my secure inheritance, of a verse in the New Testament.

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6

More proof! I love knowing my God will not fail me, even if I fail Him. He alone began the work of salvation in me and He alone can complete it.

When I became a follower of Christ, He saved me from the penalty of sin. Currently, I am being saved from the power of sin. In the future, when God completes His sanctifying work in me, I will be freed from the presence of sin!

Oh, do I look forward to the day when I can worship God with a pure, sinless heart!

Surrender

I have been reminded recently of the need to let go of my own desires and pursuits.

I am here to do the will of Christ, not my own.

My salvation was accomplished by His atonement. He purchased me with His precious blood. I am no longer my own.

I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Galatians 2:20

I am no longer in bondage to sin. My life is hidden with Christ in God. I am HIS slave. A slave of righteousness, not of sin.

I found a hymn recently, one I haven’t sung in a long time, that shows where I need to be.

All to Jesus I surrender;
all to him I freely give;
will ever love and trust him,
in his presence daily live.

All to Jesus I surrender;
humbly at his feet I bow,
worldly pleasures all forsaken;
take me, Jesus, take me now.

All to Jesus I surrender;
make me, Savior, wholly thine;
fill me with thy love and power;
truly know that thou art mine.

All to Jesus I surrender;
now I feel the sacred flame.
O the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory, to his name!

Crucified With Christ (by Phillips, Craig & Dean)

As I look back on what I thought was living

I’m amazed at the price I chose to pay

And to think I ignored what really mattered

‘Cause I thought the sacrifice would be too great

But when I finally reached the point of giving in

I found the cross was calling even then

And even though it took dying to survive

I’ve never felt so much alive

For I am crucified with Christ and yet I live

Not I but Christ that lives within me

His Cross will never ask for more than I can give

For it’s not my strength but His

There’s no greater sacrifice

For I am crucified with Christ and yet I live

As I hear the Savior call for daily dying

I will bow beneath the weight of Calvary

Let my hands surrender to His piercing purpose

That holds me to the cross yet sets me free

I will glory in the power of the cross

The things I thought were gain I count as loss

And with His suffering I identify

And by His resurrection power I am alive

For I am crucified with Christ and yet I live

Not I but Christ that lives within me

His Cross will never ask for more than I can give

For it’s not my strength but His

There’s no greater sacrifice

For I am crucified with Christ and yet I live

And I will offer all I have

So that His cross is not in vain

For I found to live as Christ

And to die is truly gain

For I am crucified with Christ and yet I live

Not I but Christ that lives within me

His Cross will never ask for more than I can give

For it’s not my strength but His

There’s no greater sacrifice

For I am crucified with Christ and yet I live

Strangers in Disguise

Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.

1 Peter 3:13-16

Ever feel like you’re all alone in your faith? When you go to work or school, do you feel like everybody around you is a pagan, God-hating, “Truth-is-relative” person?

Well, I have to admit that I go around too often with that mindset. It is right to have the mindset of always being prepared to give a defense of the faith that is in you. But there are other believers out there!

Yesterday, my brother and I had the opportunity to talk to a fellow classmate before our class started. God’s providence was at work…He allowed us to have this conversation. We were early for our last class because we had just finished a test in our previous class.

We started talking about majors and “school stuff.” Somehow the conversation turned toward spiritual things. He asked about what we believed. Jonathan explained to him how Christianity has become such a generic term, but our Christian belief was truly in Christ for salvation. We are saved, not by our works, but by God’s grace alone, through His Son, Jesus Christ alone!

The conversation later proved that this man had the same belief about salvation. He also proceeded to talk about several different doctrinal issues. He also holds similar doctrinal beliefs and attends a church that seems to support the same views.

God is so good to His children. Out of nowhere, He provides an opportunity for us to share His love with others!

The amazing thing about this situation is that it opened up another door to share the gospel with another classmate, who later joined our table! (Henceforth, this classmate will be known as “The Recorder Guy”…he voice records the lecture with his computer….) He heard most of our conversation, so maybe a seed was planted. He goes to a church (don’t know where yet) and has heard about Christ before, but I’m not sure whether he is saved or not. Please pray for The Recorder Guy, that he may see the light of the gospel and believe in Christ alone for the forgiveness of his sins! I will keep you posted of any news I have about him as the semester progresses.

What a great reminder to always be ready to make a defense of the hope that is in you!!

What is the second greatest commandment?

YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.

Matthew 22:39

Remember to be that ambassador for Christ, wherever you go. (2 Corinthians 5:20)

Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
